MCFF Fly Tying Meeting -- 16 Dec 2024

Awesome seasonal novelty tie at tonight's MCFF Tying Meeting that lead many to believe we were tying a Tarpon Toad variant right up until completion! ( and, really, we were!) Many thanks to Carl Sanders, our fly-tyer extraordinaire for ending the year with such a fun and challenging fly, but also for all his service to the Club and the many incredible ties and techniques he shared with us during his tenure. He will be missed, but we wish him the best and hope he'll drop into the Club any time he's able! MCFF meets the 2nd and 3rd Monday of each month, with tying night on the 3rd. As always, all are welcome and I'll be glad to save you a seat!

Mid Coast Fly Fishers -- 12 June 2023

The Mid-Coast Fly Fishers June General Meeting tonight ushered in the Summer Season as the snowbirds' northern migration left the core group of locals to continue on. The free form discussion saw excellent fishing reports spanning from the Tomoka River basin all the way down to the Keys! The fish were big, though some of the tales were likely bigger, but, as always loads of tips, tricks, warnings and information were shared. As always, all are welcome and I'll be glad to save you a seat.

Mid Coast Fly Fishers - 8 May 2023

It was a beautiful evening for casting practice on the lawn at tonight's Mid Coast Fly Fishers meeting! Our speaker was under the weather, so our meeting instead consisted of fishing reports and local news from the membership, but that always makes for a fun and informative night! There's always room for more, and all are welcome. I'll be glad to save you a seat!

MCFF Fly Tying Night - 17 April 2023

We had a great turnout at tonight's MCFF Fly Tying Night! Carl Sanders led the group in tying one of club president Capt. Dick Withey's favorite crab patterns! This fly was a challenge even for our seasoned tyers, but, I'm proud to say, we had several beginners that toughed it out and tied this crab as their first fly!! We have a Tying Night the third Monday of every month and we're always happy to help folks learn a new pattern or introduce beginners to the passion of fly tying! I'll be glad to save a seat for you!

Mid-Coast Fly Fishers - 10 April 2023

Little lighter crowd at tonight's Mid-Coast Fly Fishers meeting, presumably due to the inclement weather. Learning great news for the future of the club, some fantastic Captains' reports and, despite the rain, we had three new casters (and potential new members!!) receiving some casting instruction on the lawn!

MCFF Fly Tying Night "Guides' Shrimp" - 16 Jan 2023

Capt. Frank Brownell led the group in tying a "Guides' Shrimp" fly at tonight's MCFF Tying Meeting! This quick tie results in an almost weedless imitation that utilizes dubbing-style wraps and Clouser Minnow techniques. Should produce well!

Mid-Coast Fly Fishers General Meeting - December 2022

After months away, I was finally able to get back to a meeting of the Mid-Coast Fly Fishers Club! The good turnout tonight made for a full meeting of fishing reports, stories and loads of shared information!

On The Fly Outfitters - Brunswick GA

We took the camper for a quick trip up to the Golden Isles area of Georgia for Valentine's weekend. Since we were nearby, I wanted to check out On The Fly Outfitters, a cool Fly/Falconry/Outdoors shop in Historic Brunswick that I've been following on IG for a while. These guys are definitely keyed in to their area and have all the gear you need for a successful day in the outdoors. Get by and see them if you're around! I added a new fly shop t-shirt to my collection and dropped off a few Suburban Angler stickers for the door. I will be sure to check in with them next time I'm up there fishing!

UNI-Products Big Fly Thread

I'm really liking this UNI-Products Big Fly thread for my saltwater flies! I can lay down a thread base faster, build up a sturdier bump for eyes and crank down tighter on materials without fear of breaking my thread. I need to get a few more colors (and upgrade my bobbin)! Have you used it? Any pros or cons you've found?

MCFF Fly Tying Meeting - August 2019

In tonight's MCFF Fly Tying Meeting Capt. Dick Withey shared a proven effective tarpon fly, the Tarpon Gurgler! Before we began tying, Capt. Dick went over the situations in which to use the fly, how the fly should be presented to tarpon, how to work the fly to trigger a bite response and variations of colors and materials of the fly itself. If you're interested in learning more about fly tying and fly fishing I encourage you to join us! The Mid Coast Fly Fishers meet in New Smyrna Beach on the second and third Monday of each month!

Redfish Seaducer

Trying to recreate a fly I saw on Pinterest. They called it a Redfish Seaducer. The Seaducer is one of my favorite saltwater flies to tie and fish, so I'm hoping this variation will be successful!

MCFF Fly Tying Meeting, July 2019

We had a great night at this month's Mid Coast Fly Fishers Fly Tying Meeting! Emmett Pizzo continued his series of technique focused instruction, with tonight's topic being crab fly bodies. We practiced deer hair stacking, spinning and shaping; dubbing brush use and shaping (with a brief talk on creating your own); and tying yarn-bodied crab flies. While the group practiced the techniques, Emmett continued to elaborate, encourage and offer additional techniques and optional accoutrements to increase the success of our crab flies! If you're in the New Smyrna Beach area, I encourage you to attend an MCFF General or Tying meeting. There's always something new to learn and knowledge has never made anyone a worse fisherman!

Snook-let

Managed to catch a nice little snook off the dock tonight before the lightning ran me in! Wish I'd been using a 5 weight, but it feels good to have fishy hands again. Hopefully, more tomorrow!
