MCFF Fly Tying Meeting -- 16 Dec 2024

Awesome seasonal novelty tie at tonight's MCFF Tying Meeting that lead many to believe we were tying a Tarpon Toad variant right up until completion! ( and, really, we were!) Many thanks to Carl Sanders, our fly-tyer extraordinaire for ending the year with such a fun and challenging fly, but also for all his service to the Club and the many incredible ties and techniques he shared with us during his tenure. He will be missed, but we wish him the best and hope he'll drop into the Club any time he's able! MCFF meets the 2nd and 3rd Monday of each month, with tying night on the 3rd. As always, all are welcome and I'll be glad to save you a seat!

MCFF Tying Night -- 21 Aug 23

A great night of fly tying and camaraderie at MCFF as Carl Sanders demonstrated 5 different ways (and a couple variations) to add a weed guard and tail support  to our flies. After the demo he led the membership, new and tenured, in tying a simple Crystal Schminnow in which each tier added the weed guard technique of their choice! Many thanks to Carl for taking on the fly tying leadership role and the monumental task of reorganizing the club's tying materials and tools!! As always, all are welcome and I'll be glad to save you a seat!

Mid Coast Fly Fishers Meeting -- 14 August 2023

It was great to be back at the MCFF general meeting last night! We had a good, late-summer turnout that led to great discussions of the state of the Mosquito Lagoon, the upcoming Annual Open House, fishing reports, fly selection and even some casting on the lawn! Looking forward to Tying Night next Monday. As always, All are welcome and I'll be glad to save a seat for you!

MCFF Fly Tying Night -- 19 June 2023

Mid-Coast Fly Fisher's monthly fly tying meeting had a great group of varied skill-level tiers working on some new techniques with the Po Boy fly as tied by Carl Sanders. Consisting of craft fur with backing, rubber legs and dubbing brush tied to a jig hook with a barbel eye, should make for very lifelike movement in the waters of Central Florida! As always, all are welcome and I'll be glad to save a seat for you!!

Mid Coast Fly Fishers -- 12 June 2023

The Mid-Coast Fly Fishers June General Meeting tonight ushered in the Summer Season as the snowbirds' northern migration left the core group of locals to continue on. The free form discussion saw excellent fishing reports spanning from the Tomoka River basin all the way down to the Keys! The fish were big, though some of the tales were likely bigger, but, as always loads of tips, tricks, warnings and information were shared. As always, all are welcome and I'll be glad to save you a seat.

MCFF Fly Tying Night - 15 May 2023

Another great night of casting practice and fly tying with the Mid-Coast Fly Fishers! Capt. Frank Brownell shared his interpretation of a classic Gurgler which demonstrated multiple techniques like dealing with bucktail, stacking thread, wrapping chenille, and, most notably, introduces folks to tying flies with craft foam! As always all are welcome and I'll be glad to save a seat for you!

MCFF Fly Tying Night - 17 April 2023

We had a great turnout at tonight's MCFF Fly Tying Night! Carl Sanders led the group in tying one of club president Capt. Dick Withey's favorite crab patterns! This fly was a challenge even for our seasoned tyers, but, I'm proud to say, we had several beginners that toughed it out and tied this crab as their first fly!! We have a Tying Night the third Monday of every month and we're always happy to help folks learn a new pattern or introduce beginners to the passion of fly tying! I'll be glad to save a seat for you!

Mid-Coast Fly Fishers - 10 April 2023

Little lighter crowd at tonight's Mid-Coast Fly Fishers meeting, presumably due to the inclement weather. Learning great news for the future of the club, some fantastic Captains' reports and, despite the rain, we had three new casters (and potential new members!!) receiving some casting instruction on the lawn!

Tonight's meeting of the Mid-Coast Fly Fishers is a presentation from Kelli McGee, Executive Director of the Riverside Conservancy, covering their efforts in water quality and shoreline restoration with an emphasis on native clams. Check them out if you're looking for a great volunteer opportunity, or if you'd like to know more!

MCFF Fly Tying Night "Guides' Shrimp" - 16 Jan 2023

Capt. Frank Brownell led the group in tying a "Guides' Shrimp" fly at tonight's MCFF Tying Meeting! This quick tie results in an almost weedless imitation that utilizes dubbing-style wraps and Clouser Minnow techniques. Should produce well!

MCFF Tying Meeting - January 2020

Tonight's MCFF Tying Meeting featured a Zonker Minnow demonstrated by Phil Ewaniciki. Phil explained the basic techniques required to tie this simple fly, then went on to describe a few of the many variations possible with different tail materials and different cuts of the rabbit strips. It was a fun tie tonight and I'll be adding a few more of these (and some variants) to my flyboxes!

MCFF Fly Tying Meeting - August 2019

In tonight's MCFF Fly Tying Meeting Capt. Dick Withey shared a proven effective tarpon fly, the Tarpon Gurgler! Before we began tying, Capt. Dick went over the situations in which to use the fly, how the fly should be presented to tarpon, how to work the fly to trigger a bite response and variations of colors and materials of the fly itself. If you're interested in learning more about fly tying and fly fishing I encourage you to join us! The Mid Coast Fly Fishers meet in New Smyrna Beach on the second and third Monday of each month!

MCFF Fly Tying Meeting, July 2019

We had a great night at this month's Mid Coast Fly Fishers Fly Tying Meeting! Emmett Pizzo continued his series of technique focused instruction, with tonight's topic being crab fly bodies. We practiced deer hair stacking, spinning and shaping; dubbing brush use and shaping (with a brief talk on creating your own); and tying yarn-bodied crab flies. While the group practiced the techniques, Emmett continued to elaborate, encourage and offer additional techniques and optional accoutrements to increase the success of our crab flies! If you're in the New Smyrna Beach area, I encourage you to attend an MCFF General or Tying meeting. There's always something new to learn and knowledge has never made anyone a worse fisherman!

MCFF Tying Meeting - June 2019

In tonight's MCFF Tying Meeting Emmett Pizzo led the group in tying his preferred variation of the Peterson's Spawning Shrimp Fly! This fly pattern gave us practice in palmering a hackle feather, wrapping chenille, using a hook guard and creating monofilament eyes. Emmett also demonstrated the use of several other material choices and how they would effect the overall outcome of the fly. If you want to learn to tie flies proven to work on Florida's mid-coast, don't miss another MCFF Tying Meeting the third Monday of each month!!

It's "Ask The Captains" night at Mid-Coast Fly Fishers!

It's "Ask The Captains" night at Mid-Coast Fly Fishers. There's an awful lot of combined experience sitting at that table covering the Florida coast from St. Augustine to Mosquito Lagoon to well south of Cape Canaveral and they're ready to take questions! MCFF has this type of Q&A several times a year, so if your in the area come check out a couple meetings. I'm sure you'll learn something!

MCFF Tying Meeting - 20 May 2019

Finally made it back to an MCFF Tying Meeting last night! Emmet Pizzo ran an in-depth class on hollow-tied baitfish patterns. He started out with hook selection and variations, then covered tying thread, weed guards, fur and material options, making 3-D eyes and different head cement choices. The class tied along as Emmet walked through the steps of tying this productive psuedo-fur baitfish. I'd say, no matter the tying level, everyone in the class learned something last night! I need to practice a few more (I'm obviously very rusty!), then tie a whole box of different variations!
