Hardy Averon - Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hardy Averon – Perfection in the Form of a Freshwater Fly Reel
Ultra-lightweight reel utilizing Hardy's proven multi-pad disc drag system

COLUMBIA, S.C. (July 10, 2024) - For over 150 years, Hardy has remained the top brand for fly anglers who demand nothing but the best in fishing gear. Known for its unmatched craftsmanship and innovation, Hardy continues to set the standard for meticulously crafted fly gear with the introduction of the Hardy Averon. This reel, which is the core of the Hardy freshwater performance reel range, is an ultra-lightweight disc drag fly reel that delivers the quality and reliability that are the hallmarks of the Hardy brand. Available in half-frame and full-cage models, this new reel offers exceptional performance and versatility for freshwater anglers.

The Hardy Averon reel replaces the Hardy Ultradisc fly reel with updated and improved features that set the standard for performance freshwater fly reels. The more durable frame is designed to carefully blend performance, balance, and fishability. This large arbor reel features an open, half-frame design on all models but two – allowing for weight reduction and easy spool changes when different line sizes are required. For specialty applications utilizing thin lines, a closed frame design can be found in the 5000 EN (Euro Nymphing) and 9000 size models where a full-cage is employed for ultra-long leaders, Euro Nymphing, and Spey fishing.

The full cage Euro Nymph model features an interchangeable weight system that allows the angler the ability to fine-tune the rod’s in-hand balance. The 5000EN model also employs a larger arbor than the standard 5000 size – requiring less backing for thin lines and reducing line coils. The 5000EN and standard 5000 size spools are interchangeable and sold separately, allowing anglers to mix and match for their ideal setup.

The Averon has a buttery smooth drag featuring a large and easy-to-adjust drag knob that provides definitive clicks between settings. The drag system is unregulated allowing for fine adjustments, yet the 2.5 turn knob provides quick adjustments. With very low startup inertia, this reel delivers incredible fish-stopping power at a weight that feels balanced in hand.

The Hardy Averon comes in two colors – titanium with gold accents and black with gunmetal accents (varies by size).

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HARDY REINVENTS A CLASSIC WITH RELEASE OF THE SOVEREIGN FLY REEL

Rediscover timeless excellence with the remake of the bestselling Hardy fly reel of all times

COLUMBIA, S.C. (July 6, 2023) – The return of a legend – a reimagined version of the most popular Hardy freshwater fly reel series ever. This highly-anticipated reintroduction marks the first time this Hardy reel, true to its original design and unchanged since the 1970s, is made available to anglers after decades.

But the remastered reel doesn’t just rest on its laurels. It comes packed with a host of modern innovations, meticulously engineered in England, to elevate the fishing experience to a new level.

One of these cutting-edge advancements is the powerful self-lubricating, sealed disc drag system, exerting over 5lbs of force while remaining super smooth and reliable. This gives the reel an impressive edge, ensuring every catch is managed with confidence, control, and precision. Adding to this is the newly incorporated on/off clicker, allowing for not only ease of adjustment and enhanced precision during casts and retrieves, but the ability to silence the outgoing clicker if preferred. The reel also boasts a fast and tool-free left or right hand selector lever change, as well as dual stainless-steel bearings for an ultra-smooth, ultra-fast retrieve, putting an end to challenging reeling experiences.

The Hardy Sovereign Reel will be available in two classic colors – Spitfire and Black, and in four sizes. This offering nods to the original design, reaffirming Hardy's commitment to preserving the timeless aesthetics that our anglers have come to love.

"With the reintroduction of this best-selling Hardy reel, we're merging the trusted design of the past with the advanced technology of today," said Jim Murphy, Director of Fly Fishing for Hardy. The Fly Fishing Show Atlanta 2017

flyfishingshow.comEvenin' Folks!  New for 2017, the folks at The Fly Fishing Shows made a venue change.  This year, for the first time, they moved the show from it's Winston-Salem, North Carolina location to Atlanta, Georgia.  More specifically, the Infinite Energy Center in Duluth, which is located about 10 minutes from the former The Suburban Angler world headquarters in Suwanee.  I say former because, as you know if you follow our social media pages, The Suburban Angler moved to Florida last fall!!!  Right before they announced that The Fly Fishing Show would be held in our backyard!!  I really hated to miss the show, I attended the last three years at the Winston-Salem venue, but we just weren't able to make the trip back up to Atlanta.  Luckily, a fly fishing buddy of mine very graciously offered to take a few photos of the show and even do a couple of live videos on Instagram from the show floor.  The videos, unfortunately, are gone forever, as is the nature of Instagram's live video feature, but here are a few of the photos he took for me.  Enjoy them, and hopefully I'll make it to Atlanta for the show in 2018!!
David Testerman from River Through Atlanta demonstrating some fly tying.
The venerable Lefty Kreh doing what he does at home on the casting pond.
Rob "The Mustache" Smith working The Fish Hawk (Atlanta, GA) booth.
The guys from Unicoi Outfitters (Helen, GA) are always glad to advise!
Cohutta Fishing Co. (Cartersville, GA) was well represented at this year's show.
One of my favorite bluegill paintings!
The art of Dave Whitlock is just incredible!
My buddy David (that provided the photos) was nice enough to get Dave to inscribe and sign the card for me!
Here's David, after a busy weekend taking photos for The Suburban Angler at his first The Fly Fishing Show!  Thanks again buddy!!

Does the Galvan Brookie click?

Evenin' Folks,
I had a question on the First Cast: Galvan Brookie video on YouTube asking if the Brookie made an audible click when reeling in or paying out line.  I recorded a brief video to answer the question and demonstrate.
  Hope you're all doing well,
     Tight Lines,

My Favorite Fly Reels from IFTD and ICAST 2015

Evenin' Folks,
This is my second time writing this post, after I accidentally deleted it the first time!  It's taken me a little while to get back to it, and I apologize for that, but here are some of the reels that stood out to me at the 2015 IFTD show this year.  It's fun to look at reels in catalogs or on websites, but you just can't beat getting them in hand, spinning the spool a few times and listen to the beautiful clicking they make.  There are a couple of companies that I enjoyed seeing their reels, but I either wasn't able to get pictures or just plain forgot.  If you have a moment check out Tibor Reels and Douglas Outdoors for more reels that I would love the chance to use!
I've got one more post I'll be doing on my favorites from IFTD 2015, that'll be the rods post so make sure you check back soon to see it and check out the other posts from the Favorites series to see more products from IFTD and ICAST 2015.
I hope you're all doing well.
    Tight Lines!

Taylor Reels

The Taylor Reels Type 1 is definitely an attention grabber in the green anodized finish.  Available in 3 through 6 weights, it has a carbon drag system and a large arbor design for quick retrieval.

The Suburban Angler - Taylor Revolution
The new 4-12 weight Revolution from Taylor Reels features a water tight sealed drag, ultra large arbor and four beautiful anodized colors.  I especially appreciate the large, easy to grip drag knob and affordable price for a big game reel.

The Suburban Angler - Taylor Array
On the right you can see the Array, a 3-8 weight reel available in black, gray and matte silver that would be great for chasing skittish brookies.

Hatch Outdoors

The Suburban Angler - Hatch Finatic 1 Plus
The Finatic series from Hatch runs from the 0-2 weight 1 Plus (shown here) through the 12-16 weight 12 Plus.  The reels are available in multiple color anodizing options. The 1 Plus weighs in at only 2.8 ounces and features a mid-arbor design for quick line retrieval.

The Suburban Angler - Hatch Finatic 2 Plus
The 2 Plus shares features with the 1 Plus, but features a large-arbor that will handle 2-4 weight lines.  And, like all Hatch reels, made in the U.S.A.

The Suburban Angler - Galvan Fly Reels Showbooth
I was so glad I got to see the Galvan family at IFTD again this year.  They had the full line of the made in U.S.A. Galvan Fly Reels on display, including the new Grip series of big game reels

The soon to be released Grip reels will be available in 8-, 10- and 12-weight.  These beautiful reels are just screaming to be taken on a bonefish hunt in the Bahamas!

Aspen Reels

The Suburban Angler - Aspen Reels
Aspen Reels say that theirs are premium reels at reasonable prices.  Made in a state of the art contract machine shop in California that decided to try making fly reels.  Looks like they succeeded!  The tactical look of the matte finish would be great when a shiny reel could spook wary fish.

Aspen has reels in several models ranging from 3 through 12 weights and three different finishes.  No tool spool removal, large drag knob and hollow main shaft (for heat dissipation) are just some of the well considered features that go into this great looking reel.

Cheeky Fishing

The hybrid die-cast and machined Tyro series reels are available from 2-8 weights.  With the carbon drag system, quick change spool, silent retrieve and low price make these a fantastic entry level reel choice.

Hardy Fly Fishing

I was invited by the folks at Hardy to visit their booth and try casting one of their rods and reels on the casting pond.  It was my first time using the equipment of one of the legends of fly fishing and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

The Suburban Angler - Hardy Duchess 2 3/4"
The 2 3/4" Duchess was the first new "classic reel" from Hardy in over a decade.  An elegant looking, English made reel featuring a "Split Cage" frame design, twin line guides, hollow stainless steel spindle and a wooden handle.

What fly fisher wouldn't love to have a table that looked like this somewhere in their house?

The Suburban Angler - Hardy Lightweight Series
The Hardy Lightweight Series of reels feature the 2-3 weight Flyweight, the 4-5 weight Featherweight, the 5-6 weight Lightweight and the 6-7 weight Princess.

The Ultralite DD is the reel that I got to cast at the show.  Available in 3-12 weights the Ultralite DD series feature 360 degree color coded drag, captive spool release and an ultra large arbor.

The Suburban Angler - Hardy Heritage Series
Another shot of the "Heritage Series" Duchess reel.  Classic good looks.
